Classic football (soccer) video games.

Winning Eleven 9LE and Winning Eleven 2002 are must have sports games.

Be sure to get the PC versions of WE/PES games as they are much more customizable than the console versions.

1. WE9LE (PC)
As part of only a few sporting genres to have reached its full potential in the virtual domain, this game captures the spirit of the beautiful game beeeeeeeautifully.
It is a refined version of PES5 (semi-simulation) with player control and team movement that is second to none, but... it isn't for sale anywhere.
The game was sold in South Korea only. A patch called K-patch-final translates it to English, but the commentary is still in Korean (eastern games have the X and O buttons swopped).
Review: http://proevoburn.blogspot.com/2009/04/winning-eleven-9-liveware-evolution.html
Use speed 1.05 in kitserver speeder (use speed 1.0 for WE9i)
The game-speed of the No-DVD.EXEs for these games are slightly slower than the original .EXEs.
Use gameplay V4.7 by kingsley813 for more realistic gameplay (might have a skating-players bug)

Online: web.facebook.com/groups/dogapatch/  (classic teams version and original PES5 version)
vk.com/wel9_online (real stats, full management, rosters thus mixed, currently offline)
Weplaywe.pl (used speed 0.88) (went offline long ago)

2. WE2002 (PS1)  [NTSC-J][SLPM-87056]                                 Available at Gamebaz.com
Japanese version of PES2 (PS1), not as slow and fully editable. Has arcade style gameplay.
Best patch: ISS PRO EVO 2006
Some patches have WE2000U-23 (Japanese ISS Pro Evo 2) gameplay incorporated for a higher difficulty level.

3. WE4 (PS1)  [NTSC-J][SLPM-86291]                                       Available at Gamebaz.com
Japanese version of ISS Pro Evolution 1 (PS1).
Best patch: ISS PRO EVO 1998 (WE4)

(The European follow-up titled ISS Pro Evolution 2 is also good, but it has a screen warp problem. You can use the ISS 2.98 World Cup patch by Lennier on it.)

4. PES2013 V1.04 DLC 6.00 (PC)
Good speed, controls and gameplay and first PES game with full manual shooting.
Good patch: Pesedit 6.0 + Adboard_Swicther_1.0.0 + EPL in-game stadia by Khunnieboy.
Alternative: Every 4 Years (avoid Back to the Finals and minosta4u DOT com)
PS3 and Xbox360 versions has blur effect that can be changed on PC.
Use speed: +2 in-game (0 for consoles).

(Playstation2
PES2011-'13 pretty much the same game. A combination of PES 5 & 6 gameplay, but suffers from scripted goals. It is a little bit faster than 2014 and easier to sidestep.
PES2014: Last version of PES6 game engine. More like original PES6 but it has worse controls.)

5. WE2007 (PC)  (PES6 option file not fully compatible because of boots)
USA version of PES6. Better on the ball player collisions (less stumbling), but easier than PES6.
Player first-touches and turning much slower than WE9LE, but doesn't have the ping-pong passing that PES5 versions can have.
Best patch: WE2007 K-PATCH 1.0, but use a SGN Falkhon4 semi-converted options file with it.
Use speed 1.00

Summary of Pro Evolution Soccer

Originally called Winning Eleven, the PES games started as a more arcade style game in the 90s, called International Superstar Soccer (Jikkyou World Soccer: Perfect Eleven). ISS Pro Evolution on Playstation was the first in the series to have the wide viewpoint set far enough back. The gameplay was also refined enough to make this title worth playing even to this day. It was originally called Winning Eleven 4 in Japan and was released under the European title in the USA.  The PS1 titles to follow had a slower speed with Winning Eleven 2000 - U23 (ISS Pro Evolution 2) preferred by many players for its gameplay.
In Japan the 2001 title (PES1 on PS1) was only released under the side series called WE J-League. WE2002 (PES2 on PS1) was the last WE/PES PS1 title. The speed of it was extremely slow in the European version though.
There were a few titles that came out with the ISS name and the N64 style gameplay (even more arcade-like). They were released on PS2, but in my opinion those games are negligible.

Winning Eleven 5 (PES1) was released on PS2 (not PS1) without a US release. Drastically changed physics would signify Seabass’ desire to move towards a more realistic game. This process only delivered proper results by the final version of WE6. Although more realistic, the gameplay was still arcade-like.

PES3 (WE7) was the first PES title to be released on PC. Although different to its sequels, it is the true start of what would become PES5 and PES6. The fusion of arcade/semi-simulation within the game is its downfall though, in my opinion.

PES4 (WE8) was a much more realistic game. Its graphics would be refined till PES6, but even its final version still needed some polish in the gameplay department.
PES5 (WE9) had the gameplay refined (apparently it had a bug with the 3rd difficulty setting being higher than the 5th, differences between versions had also become very small at this point).
PES6 (WE10/WEPES2007) had the balance between the attacker and the defender shifted towards the defender somewhat. PES6 (WEX/WEPES2007) on XBox360 was the first PES title on the next generation of consoles and had HD graphics and different ball physics. An edited options file, however, could not fix the licensing in this downscaled version though.

Like Konami usually does every 4 years or so, PES2008 had a new graphics engine and gameplay. Its bugs were ironed out in PES2009 (sporting the UEFA Champions League) and PES2010 also got a new graphics engine and had some of the most realistic faces in the series. Gameplay was now finally in the simulation realm and would be finalised with PES2013. PES2013 had manual shooting and a stadium editor.

PES2014 had a new graphics engine with the gameplay becoming decisively automated, un-engaging and the player initial acceleration being sluggish with unresponsive controls to boot.

PES2016 to 2018 had small changes overall with 2019 getting the overhaul, this time without the UEFA lisence for the first time since 2009.

Editing of PES continued; to rectify the shortage of licensing, with this option limited on Microsoft consoles.

With the 2022 version the game was redesigned again (with no retail version), renamed (to eFootball) and became free to download. Konami is focused on mobile games now so they will probably not make another great football game ever again.

If you want one of the modern iterations you can go for PES2018 or 2021-update3. They are a lot less  immersive though, so the last PES game worth playing is PES2013.

WE9LE (PC)
The game has compatibility issues with newer versions of windows. For example, the game might take a long time to close. You might have to close it in task manager to close it quicker.
When you use a patch for the first time: the game can freeze at the edit screen and at the match formations screen. It will resume after a long while though (quicker thereafter).
I recommend importing dat files from the kitserver into the main game files. This can prevent the game from crashing.
Weplaywe used a WE9LE version with PES5-Club editing done to it, I think. It crashes sometimes so rather use K-Patch versions which won't crash as the base for any new patch.
